What are rapid chargers?
Electric vehicle Rapid or Ultra Rapid chargers gives an electric vehicle charge in the fastest time. Whether a charger is rapid or Ultra Rapid depends on the Kw output of the charger. Rapid chargers are typically 22kw to 50kw DC output, with Ultra Rapid chargers ranging from 50Kw up to 350Kw DC output.
Rapid chargers vary from Domestic and standard commercial chargers as they are powered by Direct current (DC). DC Rapid chargers supply power to an EV vehicle directly to Battery management system (BMS). This means that a higher power can be supplied to the vehicle resulting in the Electric vehicle being charges in substantially quicker times.
Rapid chargers are most commonly found at service stations and public locations. These are widely considered as a source of topping up a battery for a long journey and not as the primary source of charge. Due to rapid chargers being at public locations and such a convenience for EV Drivers, this is usually the most expensive method of charging.
A 50 Kw DC Rapid charger could provide an 80% Charge to an EV vehicle in just 30 minutes, depending on the Electric vehicle. In real world terms an Ultra rapid 350Kw Charger could input a range of 217 miles into your Electric vehicle in just 10 minutes.
